Increasingly I find the process of teaching to be overtly - and uncomfortably - political. A long time friend from California I’ve known since my days in seminary sent me a column from the National Review Online this morning. I don’t generally read the National Review but this column by David Prager was provocative. It was entitled “Why God Isn’t Doing Well.”

News came to me this week that Bishop Richard Shimpfky had died. It is ironic that this news arrives in this month after the retirement of John Howe here in Central Florida.  Today would have been my mother’s 88th birthday. She was born in 1923 in Homestead, Florida, 30 miles south of Miami down Dixie Highway (US Highway 1) through orange, mango and avocado groves and the occasional alligator infested swamp. She was the second of five children, only the oldest of whom still survives, my Aunt Frances who now lives in Pensacola.

I awoke from my dream with a start this morning. I was shaking and my breathing shook my frame. It had seemed very real, as my dreams often do. This is what I was dreaming: 

I was walking through a big city park in the middle of the day. It reminded me of Central Park in New York. There was a slight incline up a hill. On the faculty side of the parking lot, two rows away from the student’s bumper sticker reading “Smile! Your Mother Chose Life” (see my ranting about this one below in my blog of Nov. 9, 2009) is this amusing take on life in 21st CE America:
